The safe approach is a gradual, medically supervised taper — not stopping and enduring it. Taper schedules are individual and are often measured in months rather than days, and we set that expectation honestly at the start.

The core of treatment: several sessions a week of group and individual therapy while you live at home and, in most cases, keep working. This is where the actual work on triggers, craving, and the life around the using happens.

Can I just stop taking benzodiazepines?
No. Abrupt discontinuation after regular use can cause seizures and can be fatal. Any change should be made through a medically supervised taper. Call (858) 925-8589 before you change your dose.
How long does tapering take?
Longer than most people expect — frequently months, depending on the dose, the specific medication, and how long you have been taking it. Going slowly is what makes it tolerable and safe.
I was prescribed these by a doctor. Am I an addict?
Physical dependence can develop from taking a medication exactly as prescribed, and that is not the same thing as a substance use disorder. Either way, the taper needs supervision and the underlying anxiety or insomnia needs treatment.
What happens to my anxiety while I taper?

Are counterfeit benzodiazepine pills dangerous?
Yes. Pills sold as benzodiazepines are frequently pressed with fentanyl. If your supply is not from a pharmacy, treat it as potentially lethal.
Does Medi-Cal cover this?
Yes — benzodiazepine treatment falls under the county's Drug Medi-Cal benefit, which covers care at no cost for most members regardless of managed care plan.
Why is benzodiazepine withdrawal treated so carefully?
NIDA reports 10,870 U.S. overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines in 2023, with nearly 70% also involving illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Benzodiazepine withdrawal itself can also be medically serious, which is why it's managed through supervised medical detox rather than stopped abruptly.
Why does benzodiazepine tapering take so much longer than other withdrawals?
Because the nervous system needs time to readjust to the absence of the drug, and going too fast risks seizures and severe rebound anxiety. That's why schedules are individualized and measured conservatively rather than rushed to hit a target date.
Do you provide residential treatment for benzodiazepine tapering?
No — Golden Coast Rehab does not provide residential or inpatient treatment. Tapering here is managed outpatient, with the assessment determining whether that's safe given your dose, duration of use, and withdrawal history.
Will I still be treated for my anxiety while I'm tapering off benzodiazepines?
Yes — the anxiety that resurfaces during a taper is addressed directly as part of your care, using non-benzodiazepine approaches, rather than left unmanaged while you wait it out. We screen for anxiety severity using the GAD-7.
Is it safe to switch benzodiazepines during a taper?
Sometimes a cross-taper to a longer-acting benzodiazepine is used clinically to make the taper more manageable, but that decision is made individually as part of your plan, not something to attempt on your own. Never adjust your own dose or switch medications without medical guidance.
What if I run out of my prescription before my next appointment?
