Outpatient detox

Stimulant withdrawal is not medically dangerous in the way alcohol withdrawal is, but it is heavy: crushing fatigue, long sleep, low mood, and strong cravings. The real risk is depression and suicidal thinking during this window, which is why monitoring during it matters.

Intensive outpatient program

The core of treatment: several sessions a week of group and individual therapy while you live at home and, in most cases, keep working. This is where the actual work on triggers, craving, and the life around the using happens.

Outpatient program

A lighter weekly schedule that follows intensive outpatient and keeps the clinical relationship intact through the first year, when relapse risk is highest.

FAQs About Methamphetamine Addiction

Is there a medication for meth addiction?

There is currently no FDA-approved medication for stimulant use disorder. Behavioral treatments — structured outpatient programming, contingency-based approaches, and therapy — are effective and are what we use.

Why do I feel so depressed after stopping?

Because stimulant use depletes the brain's reward chemistry, and it takes time to recover. Low mood, exhaustion, and anhedonia in the early weeks are expected rather than a sign treatment is failing. This window is also when suicide risk is highest, which is why we monitor it.

How long does it take to feel normal again?

Longer than most people expect — weeks to months for sleep, mood, and motivation to settle, with gradual improvement rather than a switch flipping. Knowing the timeline in advance is part of why people stay in treatment through it.

Does meth cause permanent damage?

Some effects improve substantially with sustained abstinence, including aspects of cognition. Others, particularly dental damage, do not reverse on their own. Either way, stopping changes the trajectory.

What if I am also using opioids?

Combined stimulant and opioid use is increasingly common and raises overdose risk. Both are addressed in your treatment plan, and medication is available for the opioid side.

Does Medi-Cal cover meth treatment?

Yes. Methamphetamine treatment is a covered county DMC-ODS benefit; most San Diego Medi-Cal members pay nothing for covered outpatient care.

How dangerous is methamphetamine use today?

NIDA reports 34,855 U.S. overdose deaths in 2023 involving psychostimulants with abuse potential, the category that includes methamphetamine, with a large share of these deaths also involving illicitly manufactured fentanyl. That overlap is part of why intake screening checks for polysubstance use rather than treating meth in isolation. Here at home, CDPH counts 399 psychostimulant-related overdose deaths in San Diego County in 2024 — methamphetamine drives most of that category.

Do you provide residential treatment for meth addiction?

No — Golden Coast Rehab does not provide residential or inpatient treatment. Meth-related care here is outpatient, focused on the psychological and behavioral side since there is no approved medication that directly treats meth addiction.

What actually helps if there's no medication for meth addiction?

Structured outpatient or intensive outpatient therapy — building routines, addressing triggers, and treating the depression and anxiety that often follow stopping meth — is the primary approach. We screen for depression and anxiety severity using the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 since those symptoms are common early in meth recovery.

Can meth use cause psychosis?

Yes, heavy or sustained meth use can produce paranoia, hallucinations, and other psychotic symptoms, and that gets assessed carefully since it may need coordinated psychiatric attention. If you're experiencing this, tell us directly rather than waiting for it to pass on its own.

How long does meth withdrawal and the 'crash' period last?

We don't give a fixed timeline because it varies significantly by person, but the crash phase — exhaustion, low mood, heavy sleep — is a known part of stopping meth and is addressed as part of your care plan, not something you're expected to just push through.

Can I keep working while in treatment for meth use?

For many people, yes — outpatient and IOP schedules are structured to work around a job, though the right level of care depends on how disruptive use has become. That's determined in your assessment, not assumed.
