Verify your insurance

Takes about 60 seconds. Our admissions team confirms your benefits and calls you back — usually within the hour.

Verifying your insurance is free, 100% confidential, and carries no obligation.

Group therapy is where isolation breaks. Much of the clinical work in our programs happens in group, and that is a deliberate clinical choice rather than a scheduling convenience.

Almost everyone dreads it beforehand. Almost nobody lists it as the worst part afterward.

Why group does things individual therapy cannot

  • It ends the private conviction that you are uniquely broken. Hearing your own experience described by someone else, out loud, does something no reassurance from a clinician achieves.
  • Feedback comes from people with standing. An observation from someone who has lived it is harder to dismiss than the same observation from a professional.
  • It is live practice. Relationships are where most of these difficulties actually show up, and group is a room full of relationships with a clinician present.
  • Helping someone else works on you. Being useful to another person in the room reliably shifts something that receiving help does not touch.

What our groups are like

Groups are led by clinicians, not peer-run. They fall into a few types: process groups working with what is happening in the room, skills groups teaching CBT and DBT tools, psychoeducation, and groups focused on the practical mechanics of early recovery or symptom management.

Confidentiality is a ground rule and it is taken seriously. Nobody is forced to speak on their first day. Attending and listening is a legitimate way to start.

Where group fits

Group carries most of the programming in PHP, our mental health IOP, and our substance use IOP and outpatient programs, alongside individual therapy in each.

Where this fits in our programs

Therapy at Golden Coast Rehab is delivered inside a program rather than as a standalone service. That means our specialty mental health partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, provided under our County of San Diego contract, and our substance use intensive outpatient and outpatient programs under DHCS certification 370254AP.

Which modalities you work with is decided with your clinician based on what you are dealing with, not assigned by a template.

FAQs About Group Therapy

What if I do not want to talk in front of people?
You do not have to on day one. Most people listen first. Nobody is put on the spot, and the discomfort typically fades within a session or two.
Is what I say in group confidential?
Confidentiality is a ground rule for every member and it is enforced. Clinicians are also bound by HIPAA; your information is HIPAA protected.
Are mental health and substance use groups mixed together?
Programming is organized by program, and the two lanes have separate authorities and separate group content. Where someone is in both, their schedule includes both.
Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?
For many conditions the evidence is comparable, and for isolation, shame, and interpersonal difficulty group does things individual work cannot. In our programs the two run alongside each other rather than competing.
